DNA technology:

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, it is usually an acid that contains genes that help living organisms in development and functions, the DNA has four molecules which are referred to as bases, these bases have a sequence where information is stored, the information contained is retrieved using genetic codes and these codes are retrieved by copying the DNA into related nucleic acid in a process called transcription.

The molecule of DNA is one long chain but it is made up of only four different molecules referred to as bases and they include Cytosine, Adenine, Thymine and Guanine, these molecules make pairs and the DNA in a human cell has 23 pairs where one pair comes from the mother of the person in consideration and the other comes from the father, every persons DNA is unique except for identical twins.

Some uses of the DNA technology include agricultural engineering whereby we have genetically modified food, finger printing and the collection of historical information in history and also anthropology. In this case we will consider finger printing which is useful in crime detection and solving crime.

Finger printing:

The use of DNA was first developed by Alec Jeffrey in the year 1984 and in 1988 the DNA crime solving technology was used to solve the murder case committed by Colin Pitch.

Scientist will use body products or body parts to detect the perpetrators of crimes, this include blood and other body fluids, hair, semen, bones, skin or even saliva from a crime scene to detect the perpetrators of crime. This process of crime detection is referred to as DNA profiling and it is termed as a reliable way to identify criminals from a crime scene.

A criminal is supposed to provide samples of his or her DNA in order to aid in comparing the DNA sample from the crime scene and that of the convict, because DNA profiling is usually reliable and accurate when the match is made then the convict is termed as guilty.

The process of investigation:

Collection of DNA samples from a crime scene is the first step in DNA step, this is followed by creating a DNA profile regarding this samples and the last step is the collection of samples from suspects for DNA profiling and comparing them with those from the crime scene.

Advantages of DNA:

It is reliable and accurate because the results produced are considered to be accurate, the DNA evidence is produced in a court of law and this helps in solving cases, however the DNA technology is sometimes not helpful in the case where the crime scene has many samples that involve a lot of DNA sample from a number of people and this might be misleading and difficult to solve. Perpetrators of crime may also be informed about this technology and may take the advantage of this by placing DNA samples on crime scenes which may lead to conviction of innocent citizens. however despite this disadvantages the technology is still helpful in solving crimes.

Used to solve crimes that would have been difficult to solve using other methods, other methods that were traditionally used to solve crimes were not as reliable as this technology. Traditional methods were not very accurate as this method used today and some times the traditional methods did not conclude many crime cases due to lack of evidence and the introduction of this technology brought a relief to crime detection and the justice system

Geographical mapping system (GIS):

GIS is another technological advancement that can be used to solve crimes, it can be referred to as system in which there is capturing and storage of information regarding geographical regions, this technology is used in scientific science investigation. The GIS technology can also be defined as the computerised mapping systems that allow the layering of information to give detailed information and description of geographical areas.

The use of GIS in crime detection involves the following steps:

Collection of data regarding incidences and arrests on geographical areas which in turn helped increase police patrols to reduce crimes. Vehicle recovery sites data was also collected and mapped in order to help solve and prevent crimes.

Yes, I know, all the big computer and consumer electronics companies are investing billions in the market for pumping entertainment content via fat pipes into and throughout the home. And no doubt, this is becoming a very large market that will ultimately be huge. But that's not what I'm talking about. I believe that there is an even larger, but more mundane opportunity for software, semiconductor and electronics companies that has been largely ignored. This new concept has been alluded to and talked about in theoretical, general terms by futurist speakers at trade shows and TV sound bites for many years. So in that sense it's not really new. But little has been done in terms of actual investment in companies and product development to attack this potentially enormous market. So what exactly am I talking about? Do you remember several years back all of the snickering about the Internet Toaster? Let's call this the Internet Refrigerator market. What's so compelling about this potential new market segment vs. the home entertainment opportunity that nearly every monster high tech company is already chasing? Well, of course, the first attractive thing is that not everyone is chasing it yet! As far as I can tell, very few are. The second thing that pops up when considering this potential market is that there should be an attractive payback available to the customer. That's something the entertainment space will never be able to say-it's sexy, fun and high profile-but it's looking to take a share of the already stretched consumer wallet for discretionary purchases. Thirdly, all of the technology necessary is already in existence. In the most recent study on broadband penetration this year, Nielson/Netratings found that 56% of US homes connected to the Internet are now using a broadband connection. Worldwide, almost two thirds of all Internet connects are broadband. The broadband world has arrived, and it's time to start utilizing it for something other than simply surfing the World Wide Web. And finally, this concept should yield substantial benefit the US and world economies by driving costs out of some of the most labor intensive, inefficient tasks in modern western society. Yes, I said substantial economic benefits. Curious yet? Read on! I'm proposing that all of the major systems and appliances in our high tech homes be Internet-enabled and connected to our home network. Let's look at the benefits of this concept using an example of our Internet Refrigerator. THE PROBLEM This example is an amalgamation of similar experiences I've had many times since reaching adulthood. You're employed full time at a job that you drive to 15-45 minutes away from your house. If you're married, your spouse also is likely similarly employed these days. A major appliance such as your refrigerator breaks down-and of course it's outside of the warranty period (they plan it that way!). You either call the store you originally purchased the appliance from, or if you're the thrifty type, shop around for a lower cost independent service provider. What happens next? Mostly frustration, if my experience is typical. First off, no one can make it out on a service call for three days (there's a reason for this-these are highly inefficient businesses). You still don't even know what's wrong with your Fridge, and by the way-the food is starting to rot. In addition to having to wait three days, no one will give you an actual specific 'appointment' these days. Most often they give you the dreaded '4 hour window' appointment. Oh, and by the way, there is a minimum charge of $65 just to come to your house. No guarantees, no refunds even if they can't fix it. But what can you do? You swallow hard, eat out for the next 3 days (at added expense to your budget and waistline) and wait for your appointment. The day of the appointment finally comes and you head home for your 4-hour window, much to your boss's consternation. Four hours come and go, and of course no one shows up. You call the service company, and as usual, 'they're running late'. (This happens because these inefficient service companies are in such demand that don't need to have a customer orientation, and utilize very little technology to optimize their business). So you wait an additional hour for them to get there, and then another hour to diagnose the problem. Pretty much a whole day of work productivity shot-I hope that you weren't getting paid by the hour! But it gets even better. Upon diagnosing the problem, the repairman says 'It's $200 for the part and $150 for the labor. Unfortunately I don't have the part available in the truck-I'll have to order it.' Great! Now you're scheduling another appointment with a 4-hour window-you get the drill at this point. It's pretty ugly. In this modern world, there's got to be a way. And I believe that there is. THE SOLUTION What if that refrigerator was instrumented and outfitted with a cheap microcontroller, embedded web server software and Ethernet or WI-FI Port? Well, especially with all of the broadband households now online, you could make major changes to this productivity-sapping service fire drill. The first thing you would do under this new scenario is to call up your preferred service provider and explain the problem. After granting them access to the Refrigerator's IP address using the 'Home Network Console' software on your PC, the service provider would run a diagnostic software program on your Fridge. With luck they could diagnose the problem right then and there. Maybe all that's required is a minor tweaking of the appliance setting that can be done remotely or by you, and only a small service charge is due. Even if it's a failed part, the service provider could check their parts inventory immediately and order the part if it's out of stock. Only when the part is available would a service truck be dispatched for a quick installation. Think of how much service technician time would be saved. Or how much gas saved, fewer trucks on the road, not to mention the productivity regained by the hapless customer waiting at home. The service providers would become much more efficient, allowing them to provide better service, at lower prices, using less techs. Customers would be thrilled and have added productivity in their own jobs. And I believe that the first Appliance manufacturers offering this capability would have a huge advantage and an opportunity to quickly gain market share while enhancing their brand as 'cutting edge'. This opportunity applies to just about every capital purchase in the home: Refrigerators, Washers & Dryers, Home Entertainment, Furnaces, Air Conditioners, Stoves, Dishwashers, etc. Some of you may think this sounds great but it's too futuristic and not realistic. Yet as I mentioned above, all of the necessary technology exists today. When you think about it, this idea is really just an extension of the software being installed in most modern computers which allows control and problem diagnosis remotely by an IT professional. And the campaign for acceptance of this concept could piggyback the huge investment by companies pushing entertainment and communications products/services over broadband pipes, which is already in process. Who and When? So why hasn't this happened yet? Why is this being ignored, while everyone dukes it out over home entertainment? It's hard to say because it could really be the proverbial 'Next Big Thing'. But again, it's not very sexy. And the Appliance manufacturers are not technology-driven companies, and as a result don't' innovate or adopt new technology very quickly. But this is going to happen, it's just too big. It is only a question of when. So what's it going to take? Maybe it will be a smaller appliance manufacturer who needs an edge to compete, and is nimble and more willing to innovate and take risks. Or it might possibly occur when a network/systems management software company looking for a way to grow, decides to extend their core competency from B2B to B2C by approaching appliance manufacturers with market-ready software. Or an embedded software or silicon company that sees the opportunity to extend their microcontroller or embedded web server from the industrial world to the enormous consumer market. When will it happen? I don't know. I expected it to be well underway by now. But sometimes, big ideas are slow to catch on. With this one, I'm convinced it's just a matter of time. I've seen many projects that tried using intermediate steps, falling between the two extreme approaches above. We've tried to start projects by purchasing as many 'pre-written' modules as possible, used various languages and platforms, hired dedicated debugging personnel, tried code-generators, assembled both small teams & large teams, you name it--we've tried it. Project schedules have been written with the utmost conservatism, at the insistence of senior management. No matter. Across a number of different companies, EVERY project has slipped out beyond the wildest nightmares or everyone involved. ONE LINE OF CODE, TWO WEEK DELAY Once I asked our lead programmer to change ONE LINE OF CODE in a well-established product. He estimated it would take just a few seconds to make the change, and a few hours to test it. The change would be final by the end of the day, at the latest. Two weeks later I was still waiting for a solid product. Now, don't misunderstand. I'm not writing this to bash software developers. While not every developer I've worked with over the years has been a world-beater, I've had the fortune to work with quite a number whom I consider to be outstanding. Many have been extremely bright, dedicated and hard working. But no matter how much thought, time and effort went into it, our projects always slipped. A lot. We usually ended up with a commercially successful product, but how much better we could have done, had we figured out a way to bring the product to market on time? The only saving grace was the competition had the same problem. MORE ART THAN SCIENCE The reason, I believe, is that writing software remains much more of an art than a science. This statement is a bit surprising, until you look a little deeper. There is certainly much methodology available to guide a team to use sound, time-tested practices in developing software. However, a software program is really just a document written in a foreign language. That's why C++ and Java are called Programming Languages. It's also interesting that many programmers who aren't classically trained in computer science come from an English, Music, or other language background. Just like in writing a novel you are guided by syntax, grammer and writing rules, writing a software program is very similar. In writing a novel you are essentially creating a unique work that has never been done quite the same way before. Also true for a software program. If you knew exactly how the writing of a novel or software program would go before you began, there would be no need to write it--it would have already been done. While there are plenty of rules (representing the science) to writing good software, at the end of the day it's a unique, written creation (the art). COMPLEXITY OVERWHELMS EXPERIENCE Another key reason why conquering the software development process has appeared to be impossible, is the vastly increased complexity associated with software projects today. Let's face it, the average piece of software today does a lot more, and is quite a larger in terms of the number of lines of code, than at the dawn of the PC era. The creation of graphical user interfaces really started the explosion in the size of software code. So much more code is needed, to bring the user-friendly products of today to life. And what enabled this, of course, was the dawn of the modern operating systems, especially the overcoming of the 640K limit that the original DOS operating system required PC programs to run in. Windows and other modern operating systems almost eliminated the need to write software efficiently, at least from a code size perspective. Today the embedded systems world is pretty much the last bastion where writing code efficiently lives on--it's pretty much a lost art to most of the software world. It's interesting to speculate--if we were still writing in the 640K box, would software development have evolved to a more predictable science today? Maybe, but the world would be a less productive as a result. WHAT TO DO FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE? As you can tell from this discussion, I don't have a great set of answers on how to bring software to market on time. It's one of the great frustrations of my career. I still strongly believe that getting the best people you can get will make the problem better, even if it can't be solved completely. I also believe in keeping development teams small, with the minimum of structure necessary to run the project. It's also wise, in my opinion, to structure your product releases to be more frequent, while adding fewer new features per release. This should at least minimize the pain of each release slipping, since the slip time of each release should be less. And knowing what you're going to be coding, developing a spec document and sticking to it (no feature creep!) is also sound practice, although I've found it to be no panacea. In 1939, Walter Büchi set up his own glass-blowing workshop in the basement of a private house in Switzerland. Today, Büchi is a leading developer, producer, and distributor of laboratory equipment for research labs around the world. Büchi specializes in technologies for rotary evaporation and near infrared spectroscopy for research laboratories and for quality control purposes. Evaporation is a key step in a significant number of chemical processes, and a rotary evaporator is an efficient, fast, and gentle way of separating liquids. Specifically, this device allows for the collection of a solvent via evaporation. A chemical mixture is first heated gently. The use of a vacuum temporarily alters the air pressure around the mixture which lowers the boiling point - this makes the liquid boil faster, and lower temperatures are less reactive. When the desired substance evaporates it is collected separately. Rotation, more accurately, centrifugal force, speeds up this process. The Büchi Rotavapor is the most commonly used rotary evaporator found in labs worldwide. So popular in fact, scientists often even refer to this type of instrument as a “rotavap,” regardless of brand.

While difficult to pronounce, the concept of near infrared spectroscopy is fairly simple. Radiation is the process where energy given off by one body is absorbed by another. Light is a kind of energy, specifically classified as electromagnetic energy. So, an x-ray is a form of electromagnetic radiation: “x-rays” (a particular type of light) are emitted and then absorbed by bone matter. By looking at what is absorbed (or not absorbed) a doctor can identify what is wrong. Spectroscopy is similar in theory. Every chemical will absorb or emit a certain amount of light at a given wavelength. Spectroscopy is the process of identifying chemical substances by the light emitted from or absorbed by them. “Near infrared” is just a particular type of light. Thus, near infrared spectroscopy uses near infrared light to determine chemical species (or the the concentration of them). Near infrared (NIR) is used because it is able to penetrate further than other kinds of light on the spectrum. Büchi’s NIR spectroscopy equipment primarily supports nutritional analysis of food and feed, and quality control in the pharmaceutical industry.

These key technologies have a wide range of applications and are used in almost every chemistry, biology, and physics laboratory worldwide. They are used primarily for research and development, and quality control in a variety of industries: pharmaceutical, nutritional, agricultural, petrochemical, and many many more. NIR is even used in hospitals to monitor brain activity in patients, or by astronomers to determine the age of a star.

When Walter Büchi began his glass-blowing workshop over 70 years ago, he couldn’t have possibly imagined this evolution. Now lead in part by Walter’s descendants, Büchi employs over 400 employes and has hundreds of distributors across the globe. Büchi’s rotary evaporator, near infrared spectroscopy, and related technologies have a serious impact on the sciences.
